The Five Elements
of every dwelling.
Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Ether — the five substances from which every home, every body, and every cosmos is composed. A complete reference.
Prithvi पृथ्वी
Earth

How it manifests in your home
The floor, the foundation, the walls, the ground itself. Prithvi is the element that holds all other elements in place.
The shastric placement
Strengthen Prithvi by placing heavy mass in the south-west — the master bedroom, the safe, the most grounded furniture. Avoid cutting, voids, or openings here.
When it's afflicted
A missing or afflicted S-W causes instability — unreliable family, financial loss, loss of elders.
Remedies
Terracotta pots · yellow Gomedh stone · tortoise yantra · brown rectangles

How it manifests in your home
Water tanks, bore wells, pools, fountains, aquariums. In the modern home, Jal is also the plumbing backbone.
The shastric placement
Keep Jal in the north-east and north — underground tanks, open water features, the open-air shrine. Never place water in the south-east (Agni's seat).
When it's afflicted
A dry or blocked N-E causes stalled prospects, educational delays, spiritual opacity.
Remedies
Open water feature in N-E · blue-green crystals · conch · silver kalash
Agni अग्नि
Fire
- Direction
- South-East · Agneya
- Tanmatra (Sense)
- Rupa (Form)

- Climate · Season

- Geometric form
- Red triangle
- Quality
- Hot, ascending, transforming
- Ruling Devata

How it manifests in your home
The kitchen stove, the electrical panel, the boiler, the server rack. Agni is the element of transformation — raw becomes cooked, dark becomes lit, input becomes output.
The shastric placement
Keep Agni in the south-east — cooking, electrical distribution, heating systems. Never place Agni in the north-east, the element opposite.
When it's afflicted
Afflicted Agni causes digestive disorders, money leaks, conflict, and unexplained accidents.
Remedies
Red coral · copper plate · Agni yantra · the morning ghee lamp
Vayu वायु

- Tanmatra (Sense)

- Quality

- Ruling Devata
- Vayu (Lord of N-W) · Marut
How it manifests in your home
Windows, ventilation, cross-drafts, HVAC. Vayu is what keeps air moving, relationships in motion, ideas flowing.
The shastric placement
The north-west is Vayu's throne. Guest rooms, children's rooms, delivery entrances, and garages belong here. Keep this zone clean, windy, and unobstructed.
When it's afflicted
Blocked Vayu causes relationship staleness, stalled communication, guest conflicts.
Remedies
Wind chimes · crystal spheres · white gemstones · open ventilation
Akasha आकाश
Ether / Space
- Direction
- Center · Brahmasthana
- Tanmatra (Sense)
- Shabda (Sound)
- Chakra
- Vishuddha
- Body rupa
- Consciousness, skin of cavities, the space between organs
- Climate · Season
- Clear skies, void · Hemanta (early winter)
- Geometric form
- Indigo circle / void
- Quality
- Pervasive, silent, infinite
- Ruling Devata
- Brahma (Lord of the Center)
How it manifests in your home
The atrium, the open courtyard, the hollow in the middle of the home. Akasha is the unoccupied center — the thing every other element arranges itself around.
The shastric placement
The Brahmasthana — the central 3×3 of the 9×9 mandala — must be kept clear. No pillars, no beams, no toilets, no heavy furniture. Ideally: an open courtyard, a skylight, a mandir.
When it's afflicted
A violated Brahmasthana is the most catastrophic Vastu fault — loss of peace, chronic illness, family dissolution.
Remedies
Skylight · hanging brass bell · central chandelier · silence (literal)
Each element has a temple.
Five pilgrimages. One geometry.
In Tamil Nadu stand the five Pancha Bhoota Sthalams — temples where Shiva is worshipped as the embodiment of each element. Chidambaram (Akasha), Thiruvanaikaval (Jal), Tiruvannamalai (Agni), Kalahasti (Vayu), Kanchipuram (Prithvi).
