Nine nodes.
One sleeping
Vastu Purusha.
When Brahma pinned the chaos-being to the earth, 45 Devatas sat on him. But his body has its own geography — navel, heart, head, hands, waists, knees, feet. A beam, a pillar, or a drain crossing these nine vital nodes pierces the Purusha. The home bleeds. The Marma discipline is the silent half of Vastu — the one that decides whether your plan heals or harms.
Study the nine nodesThree tiers of marma severity.
Nabhi — Navel
- Grid cell
- Row 5, Col 5
- Ring
- Brahmapada
- Severity
- Mahamarma
- Bija
- ह्रीं
The exact centre of the plot. The navel of the Vastu Purusha. This is where Brahma is seated, where all nine padas of the Brahmasthana meet. Any structural load, column, water tank, toilet, or kitchen placed here creates the catastrophic Brahma-sthana dosha — disease, financial collapse, or death in the family line.
Rule
Leave open. Keep light, airy, floor-only or skylight-only. A courtyard is ideal; if built-over, keep the central 9 padas free of any vertical support.
Ritual
Consecrate with a small Brahma yantra under the flooring at ground-breaking.
Mantra
ॐ ब्रह्मणे नमः ॥
Hridaya — Heart
- Grid cell
- Row 4, Col 5
- Ring
- Brahmapada
- Severity
- Mahamarma
- Bija
- ह्रीं
Where the Brahma-sutra crosses the inner Devapada ring on the northern axis. The heart node governs vitality of the household head. A misplaced beam here causes chest ailments, anxiety, and leadership crises.
Rule
No staircase landing. No electrical panel. No heavy machinery. Ideal for pooja room, light-well, or an open hall.
Ritual
Install a Surya yantra aligned true-north at the thickness of the ceiling slab.
Mantra
ॐ हृदयाय नमः ॥
Shiras — Head
- Grid cell
- Row 2, Col 5
- Ring
- Devapada
- Severity
- Upamarma
- Bija
- ह्रीं
The crown node — where the Soma-sutra meets the northern Manushya ring. The head of the Purusha points North. This node governs intellect, clarity, and student success. It is most auspicious when kept above ground — which is why North-facing windows and study rooms are placed here.
Rule
Keep unobstructed — tall furniture, heavy cabinets, mirrors facing downward all block the shiras node.
Ritual
Orient study desks, meditation seats, or the ancestral altar to this zone.
Mantra
ॐ शिरसे नमः ॥
Pada — Feet
- Grid cell
- Row 8, Col 5
- Ring
- Devapada
- Severity
- Upamarma
- Bija
- ह्रीं
The southern foot node. The Purusha's feet point South. This is where heavy grounding is natural — foundations, safe-rooms, storage vaults. But never place a bed, an infant's cradle, or a prayer seat here — you would be lying at the Purusha's feet.
Rule
Heavy storage is fine. Sleeping heads pointing here is forbidden (pada-dosha).
Ritual
Bury a panchaloha Pada-mudra tile under the South threshold at foundation ceremony.
Mantra
ॐ पादाय नमः ॥
Hasta NE — Right hand (North-East)
- Grid cell
- Row 3, Col 6
- Ring
- Devapada
- Severity
- Sandhi-marma
- Bija
- ह्रीं
Where the Ishana-diagonal meets the Devapada ring. The Purusha's right hand rests at this intersection. This is a sandhi-marma — a joint-marma — and the most delicate structural node in the whole plan.
Rule
No septic tank, no toilet, no fireplace, no heavy machinery. A water well, clean puja space, or indoor garden is ideal.
Ritual
Consecrate with a Kalash of Ganga-jal at foundation.
Mantra
ॐ हस्ताय नमः ॥
Hasta NW — Left hand (North-West)
- Grid cell
- Row 3, Col 4
- Ring
- Devapada
- Severity
- Sandhi-marma
- Bija
- ह्रीं
Where the Vayu-diagonal meets the Devapada ring. The Purusha's left hand node. Governs movement, guests, relationships, social flow. A blocked NW hand creates isolation, marital strain, reputational damage.
Rule
Keep openable — a window, a door, a moving ventilation path. Avoid static heavy objects.
Ritual
Place a Vayu-bija yantra (यं) behind the NW wall near the ceiling.
Mantra
ॐ हस्ताय नमः ॥
Kati SE — Waist (South-East)
- Grid cell
- Row 6, Col 6
- Ring
- Brahmapada
- Severity
- Sandhi-marma
- Bija
- ह्रीं
Where the Agni-diagonal meets the Manushyapada ring. The Purusha's right waist. Agni's residence, the seat of digestion — which is exactly why the kitchen traditionally sits here.
Rule
Fire (kitchen, pyre, generator) is the correct use. Water on this node (sink, tank) invites chronic illness.
Ritual
Light the first kitchen lamp facing East at dawn on Kartik Amavasya.
Mantra
ॐ कट्यै नमः ॥
Kati SW — Waist (South-West)
- Grid cell
- Row 6, Col 4
- Ring
- Brahmapada
- Severity
- Sandhi-marma
- Bija
- ह्रीं
Where the Nairuti-diagonal meets the Manushyapada ring. The Purusha's left waist — the heaviest corner of the mandala. This is where the master bedroom belongs; where the weight of earth and ancestry settles.
Rule
Heavy mass (master bedroom, safe, treasury) is correct. Lightness here (glass walls, open balconies, pits) creates instability.
Ritual
Place the patriarchal seat at this corner during griha-pravesh.
Mantra
ॐ कट्यै नमः ॥
Jaanu — Knees
- Grid cell
- Row 7, Col 5
- Ring
- Devapada
- Severity
- Upamarma
- Bija
- ह्रीं
Where the Brahma-sutra meets the southern Manushya ring. The Purusha's knees. In practical terms, this is the passage zone — the corridor that links main hall to South rooms. Furniture placement, door swings, and structural cracks here signal knee, joint, and grounding problems in the family.
Rule
Keep as a clean passage. No furniture corners, no load-bearing column, no toilet door on this axis.
Ritual
Inscribe the Jaanu-mudra (bent-knee mudra) on the corridor floor stone.
Mantra
ॐ जानुभ्यां नमः ॥
What never passes through a marma.
Across Mayamata, Brihat Samhita and Manasara the same seven structural elements are named as absolute violators of the Marma plane. If your plan has any of these crossing any of the nine nodes, the site is said to be marma-viddha — pierced. These can be corrected, but only before construction hardens.
- BeamStructural lintel or exposed beam running across a marma
- PillarVertical load-bearing column landing on a marma
- StaircaseStair flight, landing, or stringer tracking over a marma
- DrainSewage line, grey-water pipe, or storm drain crossing below
- ToiletWC seat, septic tank, or pit placed at a marma cell
- FireplaceStove, chimney, or combustion pit on a non-Agni marma
- Mortar jointVertical mortar joint of a masonry wall landing on node
